Guided Visit of the Battle of Waterloo

Saturday, August 31, 2019 - 1:45 p.m.

The Battle of Waterloo, on June 18th 1815, brought an end to the Napoleonic Wars and his reign of 16 tempestuous years, and took place only a few miles from Brussels.  The Club is pleased to announce a guided tour of the Memorial 1815 complex, led by Peter Forrest, a certified “Guides 1815” guide and, as some of you may know, a past President of our Club.

Peter will lead us through a discussion, using maps, of the rise of Napoleon, how there came to be a battle here, and the events leading up to it.  We will also hear about the interesting strategic and tactical decisions taken by both belligerents, and the impact they had on the outcome of the battle itself, along with interesting anecdotes.

Your ticket will include a visit up the Lion Mound (for those so inclined), a tour through the amazing Panorama (a huge diorama of the battle at a critical point) and then (by audio guide) the excellent Memorial 1815 Museum itself, built for the 200th anniversary in 2015.  You may need 2.5 hours for the above.

There is a brasserie next door, and you may join us for a coffee or a drink afterwards.

After your tour with Peter, your ticket also includes a visit to the Hougoumont farm, a strongpoint exploited by the Duke of Wellington, and site of furious fighting, 1.2km from the Memorial, which has a museum and a very good multi-media show.  Access there by foot, horse-drawn carriage, or by car.

Please note that this event is limited to 20 participants.
