Illustrated Talk on Antwerp Artist

Until recently, the Antwerp artist, Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930), was relatively unknown, even in his home town. That all changed in the early 1990s, when his biggest fan, Erwin Joos, opened up a small museum in central Antwerp dedicated to Van Mieghem’s work. Interest in the artist grew; the collection of paintings, drawings, and sketches expanded; and Joos relocated the museum (twice) to larger premises. Now the collection is getting set to move again, this time to the new Red Star Line/People on the Move Museum, scheduled to open in Antwerp’s old harbor area in 2012, where Van Mieghem’s works will be one of the main attractions.

Come along to the Renaissance Hotel in Brussels on Thursday, October 21 to hear Erwin Joos, curator of Antwerp’s Van Mieghem Museum, give an illustrated talk on the social realist artist who immortalized dock workers and emigrants on their way to the New World via Red Star Line steamships out of Antwerp in the early decades of the last century.

Mr. Joos, a passionate and lively speaker, will provide you with an entertaining evening.

He has written five books on Van Mieghem, including Antwerp-New York: Eugeen Van Mieghem (2006), and has organized 15 major exhibitions of Van Mieghem’s work in Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, and the United States. In addition, Mr. Joos has given some 100 lectures in Dutch, English, and French in Antwerp, Amsterdam, Brussels, New York City, Paris, and Philadelphia, and five aboard the Queen Mary II sailing between Southampton and New York.
