The American & Canadian Reading Group

On the second Wednesday of the month, from 19:00  to 21:00 you are invited to join our Reading Group to discuss the book-of-the-month, written by an American or Canadian author. We meet once a month, our evening get-together is in the Brussels area.

    Reading Group guidelines/criteria:

We look for great authors who write in English, available for purchase in shops or online, not more than 300-400 pages, and prefer those that have a score of at least 4/5 on Goodreads.  The books do not have to be recent; they can also be ones you loved, and we might have missed.

Interested in joining the Reading Group?

The Reading Group meets in member's homes in Brussels and the surrounding area.  As such, it is restricted to members of the AWCB and ACB.  Current members of the AWCB and ACB are encouraged to reach out bookclub@awcb.org with any questions.

Non members can find the conditions to join either club on their respective websites

      CHATEAU DE VEVES TOUR

      MAY 25TH 2PM

Discover an exceptional heritage of Wallonia. Live the story and let yourself be guided by the story of the past. Enter in an extraordinary and enchanting world.  Enjoy a timeless moment within the walls of Chateau de Veves.

Château de Celles, also known as Château de Vêves, is a listed monument and one of the most remarkable examples of 15th-century military architecture.

According to tradition and chronicles, the foundations of the original castle date back to the time of Pepin de Herstal (670-714), who was attracted to the area by the proximity of Saint-Hadelin and the favorable location of the hill overlooking and commanding the old road from Dinant to Rochefort.

Destroyed in 1200, rebuilt in 1230, the buildings burned down in the early 15th century and were restored after the fire. The château remained a fortress until the end of the Middle Ages.

During the Renaissance period, the buildings were completely transformed; later, under Louis XV, further modifications were made, mainly to the interior layout, woodwork, alcoves and wall windows. The layout forms an irregular triangle flanked by four large towers and two smaller ones.

Proudly overlooking a superb valley, it’s just as pretty on the inside: still inhabited by the same family and fully furnished, the “Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant” is sure to delight young and old alike!

Staircases, galleries, terraces, grand halls, chapels and small cabinets all invite you to stroll for pleasure.

Join us for a guided tour of this magnificent medieval castle straight out of a fairy tale!

Chateau de Veves is located in Celles, about 1 hour drive from Brussels just outside Dinant. Take your time and enjoy the scenic route from Namur. Stop in Dinant for lunch along the river or just for a stroll after the tour, well worth the detour.

The tour starts at 2pm sharp and lasts 1h15.

DF-Direct presents: Navigating Retirement Planning for U.S. Expats

      DF.png

Retiring is no longer just about picking a date and a hobby; for the global American, it is about navigating a complex intersection of tax treaties, currency shifts, and evolving federal policies. With the 2026 tax landscape shifting due to new legislation like the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) and the sunsetting of previous tax provisions, the "standard" retirement plan simply doesn't work across borders. In this session, Joshua Madden and guest (TBD) unpacks the critical pillars of an expat retirement.

Leading with Purpose: Women at the Helm in a Changing World

Seizing on the rare opportunity of Paige Alexander, CEO of The Carter Center's, visit to Brussels, we have assembled an exceptional panel of women leaders for what promises to be a truly compelling evening of conversation, insight, and connection.

      BICENTENARY

      VAL - SAINT - LAMBERT

      BELGIAN CRYSTAL TOUR

      JUNE 7TH 2PM

In 2026, Val Saint-Lambert will celebrate 200 years of glassmaking history and know-how. The crystal works was founded in 1826 and has left its mark on the region’s industrial, artistic and social history, as well as beyond its borders.

The Bicentenary pays homage to this unique legacy through an ambitious programme combining heritage, modern creation and artistic innovation.

Throughout the bicentennial celebrations, visitors will be able to watch glassblowing demonstrations in the workshops. The master glassmaker's ancestral techniques reveal the magic of molten crystal, shaped before visitors' eyes.

Master craftsmen of crystal since 1826

Since 1826, Val Saint Lambert has been creating a rich heritage, manufacturing crystal of unrivalled quality.  Our knowledge and passion for the craft shines through in the timeless elegance that transforms homes and places into magical spaces.

Val Saint Lambert is an essential part of our cultural and industrial heritage, and everything we create has the "Made in Belgium" label.  It is a privilege to be able to pass on this centuries-old tradition of elegance and style to future generations.

Today, Val Saint Lambert remains true to its identity by continuing to combine traditional crafsmanship and expertise.  Our in-house artisans, and other well-know designers, are regularly invited to combine their contemporary designs with our expertise, in order to create true works of art.

For the future, Val Saint Lambert is building a younger, fresher image.  In terms of design, this means that more contemporary creations will be added to the traditional collections, so they can cater to the interiors of tomorrow.

Our aim is to continue manufacturing stunning, beautiful crystal using traditional Belgian craftsmanship, enriched with a touch of modernity.

Join us for this very special tour of the Val Saint Lambert Crystal Factory Site. You will not only learn how crystal is made but you will see first-hand how it is blown into these magnificent pieces that are world-famous.

      WATCH THEIR VIDEO HERE

For those interested, the visit will end with a stop in the shop where you can bring one of those unique pieces home.

      SOLVAY HOTEL TOUR

The American Club of Brussels invites you for an exceptional tour of this uniquely beautiful landmark of Art Nouveau in Brussels.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Monument, the Solvay House is a part of the major Town Houses of the Architect Victor Horta.

In 1894, Armand Solvay, the chemistry magnate, son of the chemist, industrialist and philanthropist Ernest Solvay engaged Horta's services, granting him unlimited freedom of creation and unrestricted funding to bring to fruition the project of a home for his bride in Art Nouveau style. It is located on 224 Avenue Louise.

It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000 as the core of urban residences that Horta designed before 1900.

For this wealthy patron, Horta could spend a fortune on precious materials and expensive details. He designed every single detail: furniture, carpets, light fixtures, tableware and even the doorbell. He used expensive materials such as marble, onyx, bronze, tropical woods, and more.

      The construction lasted 5 years.

Join us on a guided visit of this major realization of Victor Horta in Brussels. Don't miss it!

      ACB Annual OMMEGANG DINNER

      Opening Night - Wednesday July 1st, 2026 at 19:00

      Roy d'Espagne, Grand Place

We're delighted to be returning to the iconic Roy d'Espagne for our annual ACB Ommegang Dinner — and what a setting it is. Perched above the Grand Place, it offers one of the finest views of the Ommegang procession in all of Brussels.

The best part? While spectators in the market square pay between €55 and €85 for a seat, our guests enjoy the full spectacle from the comfort of a three-course dinner — included in the price.

Watch the 2019 Ommegang trailer on YouTube

The Ommegang is Brussels at its most theatrical: 1,400 performers, horses, giants, flag-throwers, puppet theatre, and grand historical pageantry commemorating Emperor Charles V's magnificent entry into the city in 1549. A UNESCO-recognised tradition, it is quite simply one of the great spectacles of the European calendar.

Joining us will be an international crowd of over 60 guests, making the evening as much about wonderful company and conversation as the show itself. Whether you're a returning guest or joining us for the first time, it promises to be a truly memorable night.

Cash Bar Cocktail Hour & 3 Course Dinner Menu with Drinks Included in the Price

The evening begins with a cash bar from 19:00, giving guests a chance to mingle before dinner.   At 20:00 our 3 course dinner will start which inludes ½ liter of water and ½ bottle of house wine per person.  When registering you will be asked to select one dish per course from the following menu:

       Appetizers

Grey shrimp croquettes with fried herbs and lemon, or

Salmon tartare with fresh herbs, avocado and mango, or

Grilled vegetables with lightly spiced vegan yogurt

      Main courses

Coucou de Malines with Herve cheese sauce, beer and Liège syrup, grenaille potatoes, or

Sea bream fillet, vegetable tian, sauce vierge, or

      Truffle linguine

      Desserts

American Apple Pie with ice cream, or

Fresh fruit soup with mint syrup
