America: It's Also Our History!

Join us for a private, guided evening visit and reception of the ground-breaking exhibit, America: It’s Also Our History!, at the Museum of Europe in the Tour & Taxis exhibition halls on Tuesday, November 9.

This major cultural event, under the auspices of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union, traces three centuries of relationships between Europe and the United States, and shows the fascinating back-and-forth movement across the Atlantic by which Europeans and Americans have influenced each other and borrowed from each other to make what they both are today.

A multifaceted show, America: It’s Also Our History! integrates works of art, film, photography, interactive displays, original objects, installations, audio-visual components, and all that modern museum design can provide to engage our minds and emotions.

The drama is played out in four acts. In the first, European America, the visitor accompanies the first Europeans to settle in the New World and create a new state. The second act, American America, shows how the young Republic distanced itself from Europe, at the same time as European culture, science, and technology continued to inspire it. The third act, American Europe, reveals a more ambiguous period of the relationship. Twice in half a century, Americans came to the rescue of a divided and bloodied Europe. Fascinated by GIs and Hollywood, Europe became Americanized – although this did not prevent it from questioning the supremacy of Uncle Sam. The fourth act, Europe and the United States, is an ongoing one. It began when the United States won the Cold War at the apex of its power. However, the Atlantic Ocean is no longer the center of the world. The world has become multipolar and globalized, and it challenges the Atlantic community in a completely new fashion.

This is your opportunity to experience a unique 3-D journey. Board the Mayflower, cross the Atlantic to Ellis Island, discover the tales of European immigrants, relive the great motion picture scenes of Hollywood, listen to jazz and rock greats, keep pace with the American Way of Life, take a fresh look at difficult times, and imagine a better tomorrow.

Our evening will start at 6:30 p.m. with a guided tour of the exhibit. Afterwards, there will be a reception that includes snacks and sandwiches, water, soft drinks, and red and white wine.

Spouses, partners, and guests are cordially invited to attend. The participation fee is €30 p.p. for members and €40 p.p. for non-members. Reservations are due by noon on Friday, November 5 by email (info@americanclubbrussels.org), online, or by telephone to the ACB Office Manager (02.219.58.08).
