Conference:
The True Story of Bastogne

Peter Schrijvers, author of Those Who Hold Bastogne, has decided to deal with a series of persistent myths regarding the Battle of the Bulge. The historian will be giving a lecture at CegeSoma in Brussels on January 21, 2015.

The classic narration of the famous siege of Bastogne reads as follows: fatigued troops held out eight days, until they were gloriously relieved by General Patton's tanks. Sounds like a western, with cowboys, Indians and the cavalry as deus ex machina.

In his latest book, historian Peter Schrijvers (University of New South Wales, Sydney), deconstructs the tale. He claims that the Battle does not fit the motif of the classic Western.

In reality, the battle lasted three long weeks more, and as a matter of fact, the last weeks were those which made a difference. Fanatic Waffen-SS troops turned the scenery into a 3uch more brutal struggle. Also, the implication of civilians was much larger than what is commonly believed.

Do you want to discover the true story of Bastogne? Come to CegeSoma on January 21.
