Hot off the press: Don't Wait for the Next War

As America emerges from a decade of expensive overseas wars, a renowned military leader, global affairs expert, and political commentator identifies a new unifying national strategy to make the US independent of the Middle East, freeing the country to focus fully on the resurgence of China.

America has always proved exceptional in its ability to rally around a common purpose.  For much of the 20th century, this common purpose was war, but with the end of the Cold War came the end of America's sense of its strategic purpose in the world. After a decade of drift, the U.S. was violently dragged back into international conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our armed forces responded magnificently, but the sense of purpose was unclear, and few American citizens understood the cause for which their sons and daughters were fighting and dying.

War is a poor substitute for strategic vision, argues Wesley K. Clark, a retired four-star general in the U.S. Army, in Don't Wait for the Next War. Now, with five long-term, persistent, interrelated, international challenges facing us - terrorism, cybersecurity, financial instability, the rise of China, and global climate change - Clark presents a new strategic vision for America.  He argues that this "inflection point" can be a gift to American leadership, and a rallying cause around which we can build a sharp and forward-thinking national strategy.

He serves as a member of the Clinton Global Initiative's Energy & Climate Change Advisory Board, and is the recipient of many awards, including the Purple Heart and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
