A
Guided Visit to the Chagall Retrospective
Join us on Saturday, April 18,
for a guided visit of the Marc Chagall Retrospective. Over 200 works of Marc
Chagall have been gathered worldwide for this major retrospective exhibition.
From early paintings of 1908 to his final, monumental works of the 1980s, the
show offers a rich overview of the painter’s artistic career.
The exhibition presents the
main themes of his work, in particular his connection with Jewish culture,
the iconography of the Jewish village, and folk traditions. It also covers
his discovery of 17th century literature –such as La Fontaine– the revelation
of light, and the particular use of color.
Special attention is given to his Russian period at a time his personal style
stands out in an avant-garde art scene featured by the cubist revolution. The
original poetic language of Chagall is faithfully revived and visitors are immersed
in his amazing artistic world influenced by different cultures and
traditions.
This show brings together
artworks from over twenty international institutions: Tate, MoMA New York,
Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza,
Beyeler Foundation, Maeght Foundation, Nagoya City Art Museum Japan, the
State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, etc.
Our guide will once again be
the excellent Lieve De Jonghe.

Join
us on Thursday, April 30, for a very special event: a wine-tasting seminar

will discuss various attributes of wine, such as the color, aromas, and the
taste.
Over the course of the evening, you will have the opportunity to taste 6-8
different wines and to nibble on cheese and/or ham depending on the wines to

Corporate Profile: Manhattn’s
We are pleased to introduce to you this month Manhattn’s, our newest
corporate member.
Manhattn’s is a premium burger restaurant born in the revolutionary spirit of
giving people the opportunity to be a part of the entertaining and
enchanting New York experience. There is a New Yorker in every city.
The story of our new corporate member begins on May 24, 1626, when the
Belgian Director of the Dutch colony Nova Belgica, Peter Minuit, purchased
the island of Mannahatta from the Native American Lenape people. Peter Minuit
convened chiefs from nearby tribes, broke open sea chests, and gave them 60
Dutch guilders – US $24 worth of cloth, beads, hatchets, and other goods.
In 2011, a Belgian New Yorker, Jerry Vandermeulen, started selling Belgian
waffles in the streets of Manhattan. In 2014, Jerry decided to bring the
entertaining and enchanting New York experience to the world, starting in his
country of origin: Belgium.
Run by Jerry and his brother Phil, this restaurant features burgers from
grass-fed mature beef, Little Italy home-made buns and Belgian hand-cut
fries.

The American Club
of Brussels is one of the
oldest American clubs in Europe, founded in 1921 to foster Belgian-American
relations. Although our members comprise more than twenty other
nationalities from all walks of life, the ACB retains its American flavor.
Some of us are long-time residents in Belgium. Many of us are newcomers. We
all enjoy ourselves and the club’s wide variety of social and cultural
activities.
The ACB is a great way to expand your
circle of friends and to discover more of the delights of Belgium. Try us.
